i came home from work last week to a very excited joey. he'd just finished my anniversary gift and although it was still a few days until our anniversary he let me search for it (with only minimal begging). the second i found it i burst into tears. i could probably start again just thinking about how much his gift meant to me, in so many ways. he'd designed it for the nursery as a way for us to welcome baby home surrounded by the places that made him/her possible. nothing in the world could have been more perfect. joey told me later that the traditional gift for one year is paper. year two is cotton, so i'm excited/nervous to see what he comes up with next year!
my gift to joey was to plot out the day on saturday. i'm a notorious go-with-the-flow kinda girl, which is just code for i-don't-want-to-make-decisions/plan-any-activities-so-i'll-smile-and-act-cavalier-while-you-do-all-the-leg-work. joey loves (but really dislikes times a million) that about me, as you can well imagine. so i promised to get us into dc/provide entertainment to celebrate our day/give him a break.
i successfully got us to the metro station, onto the metro, and to the exact perfect stop just outside our first museum of the day. we spent hours touring the holocaust museum (heartbreaking!), the mall, and the national museum of natural history, and when we were too tired/hot/famished to see even one more monument we started the journey to our dinner destination, which we had to walk to - of course - since we'd taken the metro into dc. it wasn't cool outside. we planned to eat on capitol hill, and i will just emphasize the word hill to you so that you develop a mental picture of our sweaty selves trouncing through the city streets on an incline for 1.9 miles. it wasn't not pleasant, because you see my husband was along and he's pretty great to hang around with, but there've more comfortable times in my life.... by the time we got to hank's oyster bar we were both sweating through our shirts and breathing like we'd just climbed the eiffel tower. unfortunately things didn't necessarily improve from there because i ordered the salad, which turned into one of those "salads" that's really just 4 lettuce leaves fanned across a large dinner plate with a glob of some pureed mystery vegetable and costs 15 dollars. i'm convinced they get away with this because if you're dumb enough to order that salad you're probably still too dumb (and now hungry) to argue over prices. on the up side, we got off our feet long enough to hike another 3 minutes to the metro, which took us back to alexandria where we spent the evening eating ice cream (duh!) and watching hope springs, which as it turns out was not as funny as i thought it would be. sorry jojo, and now you know why i let you plan ev-er-y-thing!
i will leave you with a few of the photos of dc that i eloquently snapped on my phone (just maybe don't expect the highest quality).
and for the interested out there, here's a 28 week belly shot.
what you can't see from this photo is that baby likes to wedge whatever limb is the sharpest into my right rib cage approximately 40% of the day. the other 60-ish percent he/she likes to practice floor exercises on my bladder and spin in circles until i can no longer stand still. but that baby is pretty much my favorite thing ever, and if i have to wait for even an hour until he/she wakes up to kick some more i feel lonely and impatient. we're loving talking about the nursery and how little time we have left until we get to meet her/him. so much to look forward to these days!
